Please also see our Hints & Tips page.
What can I use Renaissance Wax on?
Renaissance Wax can be used to protect almost any surface from paper to stone, including wood, metals (including brass, copper and silver to create a barrier against tarnishing), marble, granite, stone, leather, ceramics, ivory etc. For more information see Renaissance Wax.
How do I store Renaissance Wax?
Keep in a cool place with the lid tightly screwed on to prevent evaporation of the solvent.
What is the shelf-life of Renaissance Wax?
Its shelf-life will be several years or more if the lid is kept tightly sealed and the wax is stored in a cool place. You may find you can use the same can of wax for 5 to 10 years! If the wax appears to have dried out, adding a few drops of white spirit will “revive” it. White spirit (dry-cleaning fluid) is available from most hardware stores, or if unavailable, use mineral turpentine.
Is Renaissance Wax hazardous?
No, it is neither hazardous nor classed as a Dangerous Good in transit. Normal ventilation and common-sense hygiene procedures should be observed, with gloves, safety glasses and protective clothing advisable. We can provide an SDS if you require (please ask).
Is Renaissance Wax food-grade?
Yes, it is used on granite and marble worktops in kitchens to prevent staining.
Can I use Renaissance Wax to protect things outdoors?
Yes, Renaissance Wax has been used extensively around the world, to protect outdoor items such as wooden furniture, brass plaques on monuments, metal sculptures, and cars, for example.
How is Renaissance Wax different from beeswax, carnauba wax, etc?
Unlike beeswax and carnauba wax, Renaissance Wax stays safe for the products it protects over time. Natural waxes tend to be acidic or become acidic over time, causing discolouration and damage to original finishes. Applying Renaissance Wax is also a reversible treatment. It can be removed for restoration work. It is a microcrystalline wax, with smaller crystal structures than natural waxes. This allows a better seal to be created, keeping out moisture and maintaining any corrosion-protective coats that may have been applied underneath.
Does Renaissance Wax contain silicone?
No, Renaissance Wax does not contain silicone. Silicone is not something that is approved of in the field of professional restoration and conservation due to the damage that would be caused trying to remove it. Professional restorers and conservators must be able to safely remove any surface treatment used on an antique, if a better solution becomes available in the future. Our wax is used by museums and restorers of every kind around the world.
Does Renaissance Wax contain a UV filter?
Renaissance Wax does not contain any UV filters. To be effective, the filter (an oil) would need to be incorporated in a sufficient concentration – which would wreck the hardening and clarity of Renaissance Wax.
Renaissance Metal De-Corroder
What is the difference between Pre-Lim Metal Burnisher and Renaissance Metal De-Corroder?
Pre-Lim Metal Burnisher is a mildly abrasive paste used to treat areas of corrosion on flat/smooth metals such as swords, armour and metal coachwork on cars. Renaissance Metal De-Corroder is a gentle laboratory-style fluid more suitable for intricate items (eg clock parts, old coins, etc) that can be dropped into a bath of the solution. It can also be painted or swabbed onto larger surfaces that cannot be immersed.
What is the shelf-life of Renaissance Metal De-Corroder?
At least 3-5 years if stored at room temperature in the original sealed container. Once opened we would suggest that the product should be used within the year.
Is Renaissance Metal De-Corroder hazardous?
No, it is neither hazardous nor classed as a Dangerous Good in transit. Normal ventilation and common-sense hygiene procedures should be observed, with gloves, safety glasses and protective clothing advisable. We can provide an SDS if you require (please ask).
Pre-Lim Metal Burnisher
Can I use Pre-Lim Metal Burnisher on silver?
No, Pre-Lim Metal Burnisher is a mildly abrasive paste and should therefore not be used on any semi-precious or precious surfaces such as silver.
What is the shelf-life of Pre-Lim Metal Burnisher?
This product is prone to separation after some time so we recommend not more than around 1 year. The product info on the can advises to “stir well if separated”.
